TAMBARAM: A total of 2,115 families in six town panchayats in the suburbs of Chennai have been identified as beneficiaries under a Central housing scheme. A sum of Rs. 21.94 crore would be spent to construct the houses under the Basic Services to the Urban Poor scheme of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. The objective of the scheme was to replace huts with concrete houses. A note from Kancheepuram Collector Pradeep Yadav said the process of identifying beneficiaries and approval and sanction of the funds for the scheme was initiated in 2006-2007. Of the 24 Town Panchayats in Kancheepuram district, 13 were within the Chennai Metropolitan Area. Of these, Meenambakkam and Chitlapakkam did not have any notified slum pockets. And among the remaining 11 Town Panchayats, five: Kunrathur, Mangadu, Tiruneermalai, Sembakkam and Pallikaranai were selected where the scheme would be implemented in the first phase. The number of houses to be built in these five town panchayats is: 750 in Kunrathur, 197 in Mangadu, 405 in Tiruneermalai, 367 in Sembakkam and 396 in Pallikaranai. Under the scheme, a house with two rooms and an attached bathroom and toilet with a built-up area of about 250 square feet would be constructed to replace thatched huts. Each unit would cost about Rs. 80,000. While the Central government’s contribution would be 80 per cent, the State government’s share would be eight per cent and the beneficiary would have to bear the remaining 12 per cent, officials of the Directorate of Town Panchayats told The Hindu. The scheme was for Below the Poverty Line (BPL) families who owned land and had pattas as proof of ownership, but who do not have concrete houses. The beneficiaries in the five town panchayats were identified after a survey and ensuring that they met the eligibility norms.
