KOZHIKODE: The District Literacy Mission has, as part of its initiative to empower women, launched a training programme for women. The women would be trained in driving autorickshaws, scooters and cars, said M.D. Valsala, coordinator, District Literacy Mission. Fourteen women will undergo the training in the first batch. A small fee will be charged for the training. Instilling confidence
The programme aims at instilling in women a sense of confidence so that they could do their work with ease and a sense of security. They would no longer have to depend on the public transport system. Ms. Valsala said the programme now confined to the city would be extended to the suburbs with the assistance of the grama panchayats. The training programme was launched at the Collectorate here on Tuesday. President, district panchayat, K.P. Kunahmmedkutty inaugurated the training for car driving. The auto-rickshaw driving session was inaugurated by V. Kunhali, vice-president, district panchayat, and T.V. Balan, Standing Committee chairman, inaugurated the scooter driving training programme. The mission has so far conducted 25 training programmes, including sessions on how to make umbrellas, file boards and soaps.
