About 600 students to be admitted in the first year

Madikeri: Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav said here on Tuesday that steps were under way to start a sainik school at Kudige in Kodagu district from August.

Mr. Yadav told presspersons that a proposal involving Rs. 24 crore had been submitted to the State Government to provide basic facilities at the school, which would only be the second in the State after Bijapur. Buildings belonging to the Department of Agriculture at Kudige would be utilised to start the school.

Over 20 residential quarters lying unutilised there would be renovated for allotment as staff quarters. Sainkik school would have classes from standard VI to PUC. Officers of the armed forces had inspected the spot and approved starting the school there, Mr. Yadav said.

The officers would visit the spot in July to announce modalities regarding admissions to the school. About 600 students could be admitted to the school, Mr. Yadav said.

To a question on the class C & D lands (partially degraded forestlands) in Kodagu, which was handed over to the Forest Department for maintenance under the “Land Bank” scheme in the late 90’s, Mr. Yadav said survey of the C and D lands would be completed by July.

Survey of 26 villages in Madikeri taluk, covering 12,391 acres had concluded and of this more than 5,000 acres was found encroached, he said. In Virajpet taluk, a survey of 19 villages, covering 4,637 acres had been concluded. Of this, 2,300 acres was found encroached, Mr. Yadav said. The survey of such lands in Somwarpet taluk was yet to be completed. Of the 12,293 acres in Somwarpet taluk, survey on 11,500 acres had been completed, he said.

The issue of regularising the encroached lands was left to the Government. The district administration would submit a report to the Government on the issue of encroachments.

Golf course

Mr. Yadav said 42 acres of land, on the way to Galibeedu near here, was acquired by the Government in 1983 and handed over to the Department of Tourism.

It was now used by a private party for playing golf. The Government was now thinking of striking a joint venture with the private party to continue golf at the grounds after laying down certain conditions.

About the delimitation of Madikeri City Municipal Council wards, whose number had been increased from 23 to 31, Mr. Yadav said it was done as per instructions from the Government.

Mr. Yadav expressed satisfaction at his two-year stint in Kodagu, saying he was able to start several development programmes in the district. He clarified that he was never under pressure while discharging his duty.

Mr. Yadav has been appointed Joint Commissioner of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.
