Grant-in-aid sought for all unaided degree colleges

Federation says degree colleges left out of Government’s scheme of giving grants
‘Bangalore Chalo’ planned on July 9

HUBLI: Members of the Karnataka State Permanently Unaided Degree Colleges Employees’ Federation will be observing “college bandh” on July 4 to press for their demands.

Federation honorary president B.V. Gowdar and president S.I. Metri and member of the executive committee J.M. Chandunavar said the main demand of the federation was giving grant-in-aid to unaided degree colleges.

Mr. Gowdar said apart from the unaided degree colleges, the staff of several aided degree colleges would be participating in the agitation. He said the office-bearers of Karnataka University College Teachers Association (KUCTA) had expressed solidarity with the federation.

He said the federation was hopeful of getting support from the Federation of College Teachers Association of Karnataka.

He said there were 125 permanently unaided institutions in the State, which were started after 1987. Although the Government had decided in favour of giving grant-in-aid to unaided primary, high schools and pre-university colleges, it had left out the degree colleges.

“Bangalore Chalo”

He said several unaided degree colleges had secured NAAC accreditation of B and B+, which showed the quality of education in these institutions.

To press for the demand, the federation had decided to launch “Bangalore Chalo” on July 9.

Mr. Gowdar questioned the rationale behind starting new government degree colleges. “The Government, which says that there is dearth of funds, refuses to meet the demand of the unaided degree colleges. But on the other hand, it decides to start new government colleges without taking a comprehensive look into the issue,” he said.
