Lifting of Tungabhadra flood water proposed to help Anantapur

Worsening conditions make exploration of reservoir utility a necessity


Proposed reservoir with 10 tmc ft capacity
Farmers depending on canal left high and dry

ANANTAPUR: The non-cooperation of Karnataka and worsening condition of the Tungabhadra Right High Level Canal (HLC), the lone source of assured irrigation in the drought-prone Anantapur district, with every passing year has been forcing the necessity to explore other opportunities to utilise Tungabhadra water.

Poor maintenance of the canal in the Tungabhadra Board limits, from 0 to 105 km, increasing tapping of water by farmers in Bellary district and decreasing water downstream have been leaving the farmers depending on the canal in Anantapur helpless..

Crusading forum

The Sriramakrishnaiah Smaraka Seva Samithi, a forum pursuing the cause of projects like Hundri-Neeva , has proposed construction of a reservoir with the live storage capacity of 10 tmc ft in Kurnool district, above Sunkesula barrage. 40 tmc ft of water could be lifted from there in a month’s time during with an average of about 100 tmc ft flood water is flowing down Tungabhadra reservoir over the year.

“A proposal, which has already been found feasible by engineers, on the new avenue to help the drought-prone farmers of Anantapur has already been submitted to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in August 2005”, says President of the samithi D. Pullaiah.

The proposal would meet the deficiency of water in the HLC system in AP, 10 tmc ft to Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir, water to tanks in Anantapur, Hundri-Neeva , said Pullaiah.
