Civic body seeks relief for monsoon victims

Government urged to waive loans, hike aid to victims
People cautioned against propaganda of vested interests

Kozhikode: The District Panchayat has urged the State Government to declare Kozhikode as a disaster-hit district and provide immediate relief to the victims following the widespread destruction in the rain and strong winds here last week.

A meeting chaired by district panchayat president K.P. Kunhahamed Kutty on Tuesday adopted a resolution in this regard.

Seven persons were killed and hundreds of houses destroyed in the rain. Agricultural crops, including rubber, banana, coconut trees and pepper vines, were destroyed in a large stretch of land in the district. Standing Committee chairman K. Chandran, who moved the resolution, said that the Government should take steps to waive loans as well as hike the financial assistance to victims.

Infrastructure

In another resolution the district panchayat has cautioned the people against the propaganda of vested interests attacking local bodies and elected representatives who have taken considerable effort to improve infrastructure facilities and academic level at schools.

Education Standing Committee chairman M. Radhakrishnan presented the resolution.

The district panchayat contributes Rs.2.15 crore annually for repairing the buildings of schools in the district. In the previous academic year it had allocated Rs.1.5 crore for setting up laboratories and libraries in schools.

The Rs.8.06-crore National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development scheme was implemented through the district panchayat in 11 schools.

The district panchayat was also taking the initiative to implement the Edusat scheme in all schools in the district, the resolution said.
