Rs. 10 lakh released for relief work in three taluks Water level rising in Harangi Reservoir
Madikeri: Rains slackened in Kodagu on Monday but the situation remained grim throughout the district. The loss caused by rain is being assessed by various departments. Water level in the Cauvery has come down. Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company (CHESCOM), departments of agriculture, horticulture, public works, and the zilla panchayat engineering wing are separately assessing the damages. Officers and personnel from these departments are visiting the areas for the purpose. According to information available, the initial loss caused under the panchayat engineering wing is estimated to be Rs. 3.87 crore while that of the Public Works Department is Rs. 3.81 crore. In Virajpet taluk, 16 houses were damaged whose loss is put at Rs. 1.80 lakh and in Somwarpet taluk nine houses were damaged whose loss is put at Rs. 1.40 lakh, according to official sources. In Madikeri taluk, seven houses were damaged. Thirty-one houses were partially damaged in other parts of the district. Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav on Monday took steps to distribute relief to the affected people. He has released Rs. 10 lakh for immediate disbursement in the three taluks. Under this, Virajpet taluk would get Rs. 4 lakh, and Madikeri taluk and Somwarpet taluk Rs. 3 lakh each. The three tahsildars have been asked to open rehabilitation centres to shift people to safety in case of floods. But so far, the need for opening rehabilitation centres has not arisen. Toll three
The toll in rain related incidents, including a man who was killed by a wild elephant attack, has risen to three in Kodagu. A cleaner died when a tree fell on his lorry at Kutta and a woman died of injuries caused after a tree branch fell on her at Mugutageri. A man was killed by an elephant in the Hudikeri Gram Panchayat limits. All three the deaths were reported from Virajpet taluk. Mr. Yadav has asked Virajpet tahsildar to disburse Rs. 50,000 each to the bereaved families. The level of water at the Harangi Reservoir is rising and stood at 2,819.66 feet following good rainfall and inflow from the catchment areas. The maximum reservoir level is 2,859 feet. As per official sources, Talacauvery received 56 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, Bhagamandala 47.2 mm, Madikeri 35.2 mm, Shanivarasante 33 mm, Ponnampet 29 mm, Kutta 28 mm, Napoklu 24 mm, Somwarpet 23.9 mm, Virajpet 22.4 mm, Sunticoppa 18 mm, and Gonicoppa 12 mm. Mr. Yadav said the rainfall received in the month of June was 456 mm as against the normal rainfall of 486 mm.
