DHARWAD: Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad M.S. Srikar has assured the people of Gokul, whose land would be acquired for the expansion of Hubli airport, that the district administration would make efforts to get them good compensation. Mr. Srikar, who addressed a meeting of farmers of Gokul and surrounding villages here on Monday, said a mutually acceptable price would be arrived at after holding discussions with farmers, residents and owners of industrial units. He assured them that he would take steps to ensure that justice was done to landowners while fixing the rates. He said that in continuation of the preliminary notification on land acquisition issued by the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB), a survey had been taken up. He appealed to landowners not to obstruct the ongoing survey work. The Deputy Commissioner appealed to farmers not to be deceived by middlemen who promise better prices for lands to be acquired. He said the acquisition would be in a transparent manner and if anybody had any grievance he or she should contact the Deputy Commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner clarified that it was not possible to change at this juncture the master plan prepared by the Airports Authority of India. Mr. Srikar said the first stage survey being conducted by the KIADB would be completed in 45 days and asked the people of the village and others to file their objections before Special Land Acquisition Officer within 20 days after receiving the notice. Hanumantappa Unakal, who spoke on behalf of the people of Gokul, urged the Deputy Commissioner to fix appropriate compensation based on the market rate. He wanted a new road to be built to give access to farmlands as the acquisition included the existing road. He appealed to Mr. Srikar to make an alternative arrangement for the beneficiaries of the Ashraya Housing Scheme.
