‘Child Secretariat’ planned in Nagapattinam

Special Correspondent

NAGAPATTINAM: A special children core group, ‘Child Secretariat,’ will soon be set up here to promote child protection policies and practices among stakeholders and children for ensuring overall development of children.

The Collector will be its chairperson.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Collector Tenkasi S.Jawahar and attended by representatives of non-governmental organisations, NGO Coordination Resource Centre (NCRC), the UNICEF, Child Line and Child Welfare Committees.

Crucial link

The Collector said the network of NGOs that constituted the core group had been named ‘Child Secretariat’ and registered under the Societies Registration Act. The ‘Child Secretariat’ would function as a link between the children and government departments involved in the well-being of children.

A main objectives was to provide a platform for all NGOs working for the welfare of the children to come together and address the issues relating to children. It would also strengthen the functioning of the existing mechanisms, including Child Line, village watchdog committees and child welfare committees.

Following the successful experiment of 45 NGOs working together to help the children after the tsunami in the district, it was decided to retain the network.

Survey held

The Collector said to respond better to the issues of children, the children core group, with the support of the NCRC, undertook a survey on the tsunami- orphaned children and children living with single parents.

He pointed out that 45 NGOs were working for the welfare of children in the district, running tuition centres, supplying educational materials and addressing psychosocial problems.
