‘Errors brought to the notice of Minister’

BANGALORE: Demanding withdrawal of the fifth standard Kannada medium Social Studies textbook with incorrect historical entries and printing errors, about 100 activists of the federation of pro-Kannada organisations on Tuesday held a demonstration in front of the office of the Commissioner of Public Instruction here.

The textbook, printed by the State Government, features chapters that equates South Indian history with the history of Tamil Nadu. This was an insult to the people of Karnataka, charged the demonstrators. Among those who took part in the protest were educationist G. Ramakrishna, historian H.S. Gopal Rao and Ramanna Kodihosahalli, president of the Kannada Sangharsha Samiti.

The first Kannada inscription called “Halmidi Shasana” was erected by the Kadambas.

The federation said although this was common knowledge, the textbook showed that the first inscription was by the Satavahanas.

In an apparent printing error, one chapter had the phrase “Thukku Hidiyuva Kabbana Stamba” (iron pillar that attracts rust) with reference to the Gupta period in place of “Thukku Hidiyada Kabbana Stamba” (rustproof iron pillar).

The federation said although the errors were brought to the notice of the Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti, there was no response.

Shouting slogans against the Government and the Ministry concerned, the federation members reiterated their demand for withdrawal of the textbook.
