Former OPA chief dead

CUTTACK: Former Orissa Police Association (OPA) president Rabi Das, who had plunged into politics towards the fag end of an illustrious police service, died at SCB medical college and hospital here on Tuesday. He was 67 and is survived by wife and four children including a daughter.

According to family sources, the former police official complained of chest pain and breathlessness in the morning. He was taken to hospital where he died while undergoing treatment. His body was taken to Puri in the evening where it would be consigned to flames at Swarga Dwar. Born to a Jamindar family in Jagatsinghpur in May 1940, Das joined the police service in 1964 as a sub-inspector. For his leadership quality, he was chosen to head the powerful police officers’ body.

While serving as city DSP in Cuttack, Das relinquished his government job and joined politics in 1996. He first joined BJP and later theNationalist Congress Party.
