Budding singers never had it so good before. The opportunities that television affords youngsters are so tremendous that many a singing career is launched through music-based shows on the various channels. No wonder that most music-based reality shows enjoy good participation from non-resident Indians (NRIs). Anxious parents and other family members sitting on the edge of their seats, eyes closed in prayer while waiting for the judges’ verdict are a common sight on these shows. Most television channels have launched the second edition of these programmes simultaneously. Amrita channel is now looking to make its music talent hunt show ‘Super Star’ a global affair. The channel is holding auditions in three overseas destinations. Asianet’s ‘Star Singer,’ Sony’s ‘Indian Idol’ and Star’s ‘Voice of India’ all continue to be good crowd pullers. Celebrity judges and their spats – like the one between singer Alka Yagnik and another judge, Aadesh Srivastava, on ‘Voice of India’ – too have become an integral part of these shows. C. MAYA
