Udhagamandalam: In the current spell of incessant rain accompanied by strong winds, 13 trees have been uprooted in various parts of the 55-acre Government Botanical Garden here. Garden manager G.K. Umarani told The Hindu here on Tuesday that among them were pine, eucalyptus, cupressus and acasia. Three of them were about 75 years old, one was 40 years and the remaining between 25 and 30 years. The fallen trees were in the process of being removed. A branch had damaged a part of a house in the garden. A survey of the garden had revealed that about 10 trees, near the nursery, conservatory and glass house were posing threat to workers and visitors, she said adding that departmental permission would be sought to bring them down. Seed collection
Though the wet conditions had affected the collection of seeds from flowers like aster, salvia and delphinium in some of the beds for the Autumn season, planting would commence as scheduled during the first week of July. The seedlings were ready in the nurseries. The preparation of the beds was now in progress. On account of the unfavourable weather the flow of tourists to the garden had fallen by about 50 per cent over the last few days.
