It took years for the Government to acquire the land needed to widen M.G. Road from Pulimoodu to Overbridge Junction. But days after the old buildings on the stretch were demolished, the newly built shops and commercial establishments have started encroaching into the acquired land. While some of the shops have paved the area in front of their outlets with concrete right up to the road, others have even fixed coloured exterior tiles. And all this, while the district administration is on an anti- encroachment drive. Residents feel that the drive by the district-level special task force seems to be petering out after the initial spurt of activity. Revenue officials say that a detailed land survey is on to identify the extent of major encroachments into Government land, including the Vellayani lake and crowded junctions in the municipalities. The lack of adequate manpower is cited as a major drag on the exercise. However, citizens are wondering how the most visible encroachments into the footpaths on M.G. Road have largely gone unnoticed.
