Kerala
Kerala is dreaming green. A cool State with all the National Highways and main roads lined with trees and people walking under the canopy is being envisioned. Schoolchildren were the first messengers of this verdant dream. Saplings were distributed to them across the State on Wold Environment Day for planting the dream. Labourers’ turn
Now it’s the turn of the labour force of Kerala. Vazhiyora Thanal — wayside shade — is the programme in which shade-giving trees would be planted on the medians and walkways with the cooperation of head-load workers. In Kochi, the Vyttila-Edapally road, Seaport-Airport road, Edapally–Angamaly stretch, Chathyath Church road and Thripunithura-SN junction road are some of the select roads for the programme, said R. Mohan Nair, Assistant Conservator (Social Forestry) of the State Forest Department. The State-level inauguration of the programme will be held on June 30 at the SDY School auditorium, Ponnurunni, and the planting of sapling will be held at Vyttila. In future, a stroll along the Vyttila-Edapally segment could be a refreshing experience. The authorities are planning to plant Chembakam saplings along the road. At the same time, many hope that the drive would not meet with the fate of a similar exercise carried out on segment some time ago. A voluntary organisation had made an effort to plant saplings along the Vyttila-Edapally segment but the attempt didn’t bear fruit. Many have come forward in support of the programme for greening the State. The Kerala Chamber of Commerce has offered to provide guards whereas trade union leaders of head load workers have promised to plant saplings. K.S. SUDHI
