Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh Government has approved a draft of the new Police Act to replace the Punjab Police Act of 1861. A decision to this effect was taken at the State’s Cabinet meeting presided by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. Despite the creation of Himachal Pradesh out of Punjab in 1971, the Himalayan State was governed by the Punjab Police Act. In pursuance of budget assurances for the current financial year, the Cabinet okayed enhancement in the existing rate of honorarium of panchayat assistants from Rs.600 to Rs.2,340 per month, benefiting 3,037 of them, a Government release said. The Cabinet removed the pay anomaly between ayurvedic and veterinary doctors, bringing them at par with allopathic doctors. They would also be provided with non-practising allowance at the rate of 25 per cent of their basic pay and dearness allowance. The Cabinet also granted permission to filling up of 2,400 junior basic trained by engaging primary assistant teachers.- PTI
