Puducherry: A delegation of the JIPMER anti-conversion People’s Action Committee will present a memorandum to Under Secretary to Union Health Ministry Kiranjit S. Nagi in Chennai on July 1. Chairman of the committee T. Murugan (Communist party of India-Marxist) told newsmen here on Tuesday that an invitation was received from the Ministry for the meeting. He said that a 29-member Standing Committee of the Parliament, headed by Amar Singh, MP, would arrive in Puducherry on a three-day visit from July 2 to hold talks with the management of the JIPMER and faculty members and experts. Mr. Murugan said that the Parliamentary committee would have dialogue with the members of various associations of students, staff and hospital unions of the JIPMER on July 3. A delegation of the Anti-Conversion People’s Action Committee would have a meeting with the Standing Committee on July 4 and the CPI (M) leaders including the representatives from the Tamil Nadu State would also participate. Mr. Murugan said that it had already been informed to the Union Health Ministry that autonomy would be a threat to the smooth working of the institute. Free medical services would become a thing of the past and poor patients would be put to difficulty. The draft bill on the JIPMER prepared by the Centre in a bid to convert it should be jettisoned. The trade unions and associations of employees of Government and public sector undertakings would take out a rally on July 3. General secretary of the JIPMER Staff Struggle Committee (JSSC) R. Arokiam Kalaimathy told newsmen later that his committee also opposed the Centre’s move to convert the JIPMER. He said that his organisation had requested the management to ensure that an opportunity was given to the JSSC to meet the committee in the JIPMER on July 2.
