Dharna by Government staff

Special Correspondent

Puducherry: Confederation of Puducherry Government employees associations’ members held a demonstration in front of the Central Prison here on Tuesday urging the authorities to protect the welfare of Prison Department staff. President of the confederation. C.H. Balamohanan and general secretary R. Anandarasan addressed the participants. Posts of deputy superintendents of prison were vacant for more than two years. There was delay in filling vacancies of assistant superintendents, head constables and constables. The number of inmates in the prison had also been in excess of what the prison could accommodate.

The release said that the jail warders were not issued uniforms on time. Skirmishes among the inmates had also been taking place quite often.

It was also alleged that attempts were being made by the authorities to prevent the Association of Jail Warders from discharging its statutorily recognized duties.
