Students urged to resist peer pressure to take drugs

VELLORE: Vellore Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadhav has appealed to the students to avoid peer pressure to consume drugs during their impressionable teenage to avoid their physical and mental health from getting spoiled.

Participating in a seminar in connection with the observance of the “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” here on Tuesday, Mr. Yadhav said that it was during the teenage that students were enticed into consumption of drugs which pass off as a manly quality and a fashionable trend. Drugs affected one’s physical and mental health and reduced the life span.

N. Arivuselvam, Superintendent of Police, Vellore, said that many students lost their youth due to drug addiction. T. Sivakumar, Field Publicity Officer, Vellore, said that as per a recent survey by the United Nations, there were about 20 crore drug addicts in the world. R. Pichai, Chief Educational Officer, Vellore, inaugurated the seminar. S. Rajasekharan, Deputy Director of Health Services, Vellore, Raja Sivanandam, Deputy Director (Tuberculosis), K. Gopalarathinam, District Entomologist and S. Seetharaman, Inspector, NIB, Vellore, spoke. A. Maragadham, Director, WORD welcomed. G. Sundar, District Liaison Officer, National Service Scheme proposed a vote of thanks. Earlier, the Collector distributed handbills highlighting the evil effects of drugs to passengers at the Town Bus Stand. About 300 NSS volunteers and 150 women volunteers from WORD participated in a rally to highlight drug abuse. The semianr was organised jointly by the Field Publicity Office, Vellore, office of the Deputy Director of Health Services, Vellore, NIB and the Women’s Organisation for Rural Development (WORD)
