A mixed bag for admission seekers at DU

While some made it to their dream college in the first list itself, many more wait for the second list

Faces say it all: The scene at the North Campus of Delhi University on Tuesday after the first list for college admissions was out.

NEW DELHI: It was a mixed bag for admission seekers who came to check the first cut-off list at Delhi University on Tuesday for the upcoming new academic year beginning July 16.

Though there were quite a few who made it to their dream college on the basis of the first list itself, there were many more who returned disappointed. They must wait now for the second cut-off list.

“I had applied only for B.Com. (Honours) in some colleges. While I have got through in Daulat Ram College and Kirori Mal College, I desperately wanted to get into Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC),” said Anu Arora.

“With 94 per cent in my Class XII, I thought I would make it to SRCC, but that has not been the case. I don’t know if I should wait for the second cut-off list since admissions to SRCC usually close with the first list itself. I can’t take that risk, so I think I will opt now for B.Com. at Daulat Ram and simultaneously pursue C.A.,” she said.

Armed with an 85 per cent aggregate in Science, Puneet Kohli too has made it to Hans Raj College, Kirori Mal and Ramjas in the first cut-off list for Zoology (Hons). However, the institution that she aspires to get into -- Hindu College -- is still way out of her reach.

“The faculty for Science, especially Zoology, is the best at Hindu College. But its first cut-off percentage is quite high. I have heard a lot about the Ramjas faculty too. Though I want to get into Hindu and will wait for its second list, as of now I think I will take admission either at Ramjas or Hans Raj. If I qualify for Hindu later, I can always get my admission cancelled and opt for that,” she said.

It was the same for Saurabh Giridhar who meets the requirements for Chemistry (Hons) at Kirori Mal, Khalsa College and B.Sc. (Physical Sciences) at Hans Raj. He will take admission to any of these colleges instead of waiting for the second cut-off list. “It makes sense. There is so much of competition. It is better to grab whichever college and seat you get in the first go than keep waiting,” he remarked.

With results of some entrance examinations like Bachelor of Mass Media and Mass Communication (BMMMC) yet to be declared, there are many who are wondering what to do next.

“I have made it to History (Hons) and Political Science (Hons) in almost all the colleges that I had applied to. But my first preference is Mass Communication. I have appeared for the BMMMC exam at Indraprastha College for Women. So I really do not know if I should wait for its result or just go ahead and take admission to some other college right away,” said a confused Durgesh Nandini Shekhawat from Jaipur.

While Durgesh Nandini hops from one college to another, her father Jaiveer Singh Shekhawat, who has been accompanying her throughout the admission process, was busy all Tuesday checking out accommodation facilities for her.

“Delhi University has very few hostels. More people from other places will come to the University if it provides decent accommodation. I am quite worried about the safety of my daughter, which is why I have enquired about all the places on my own as I don’t want to take any chances,” said Mr. Shekhawat.

Meanwhile for those lucky ones who have made it to wherever they had applied after the very first cut-off list, there seemed to be a problem of plenty.

“My son is eligible for both B.A. (Hons) Economics and B.Com. (Hons) at both SRCC and Hans Raj. Now he is contemplating which one to opt for. I think he will go for B.Com. at SRCC,” said Vikas Verma.
