Outsourcing firm looking to recruit online tutors

Staff Reporter

Joins hands with Madras University to hire candidates to teach English, Mathematics to school students in the U.S.

Chennai: An educational process outsourcing firm, Tutors Worldwide (I) Pvt. Ltd. (TWWI), has joined hands with Madras University to recruit candidates as online tutors.

Speaking to press persons here on Tuesday, TWWI chief operating officer Mahalingam Vaidyanathan said that online tutoring of American students at all levels was growing. The firm is seeking to expand and wants to increase its staff from 420 at present to over 1,000 by this year end.

It had provided online tuitions to 8,000 students across six districts of the United States. “Around $132 million is being spent every year in the U.S. for tutoring,” he said, pointing out that online tutors were in great demand.

A majority of the students are “low-performing and from low-income groups,” he said, adding that the firm worked towards achieving at least a 20 per cent improvement in the grades of American children.

He said TWWI had three different projects — online tutoring, teacher training for curriculum development, and programme development to develop educational content.

TWWI vice-president (recruitment) V. Chander Shekar said the firm was keen on recruiting people with an aptitude for teaching English and Mathematics. The selection process includes a test and an interview. The candidates are expected to join by July 5. The new recruits would be given training for the first three months and then designated as junior educators and draw a salary of around Rs. 11,000 to Rs. 12,000.

Through the online network, a student in a United States school would be connected to a tutor in Chennai. The interaction between the tutor and the student happens through a white board on the computer when the student logs in.

Madras University Students Advisory Bureau Director Susila Mariappan said the recruitment would be conducted in the University Campus between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on June 30. “The recruitment is open not just to the students of the University of Madras, but to other Universities in Tamil Nadu,” she said.
