NEW DELHI: A case of murder has been registered at the Hari Nagar police station here in connection with the death of a 25-year-old inmate of Tihar Central Jail here earlier this month. According to the police, the case was registered at the instance of Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Garg who is conducting a probe into the death of inmate Vinod. The probe reportedly attributed Vinod’s death to physical injuries and not natural causes. However, no one has been named in the First Information Report. Vinod was arrested for alleged breach of peace at Patel Nagar on June 10. The next day he complained of uneasiness and was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital. He was shifted to the jail hospital in the evening where his condition deteriorated. He was declared dead at 6 a.m. on June 12. The jail officials said he was a chronic alcoholic. This is the second case to be registered in connection with the spate of deaths at the high-security Tihar Jail earlier this month. The first case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was registered this past Friday in connection with the death of 31-year-old Harish. The case was registered on the findings of a probe by a Metropolitan Magistrate. The Delhi High Court had also taken cognisance of the series of deaths and sought replies from the Delhi Government and the Tihar Central Jail authorities on a public interest litigation seeking a judicial enquiry into the death of the inmates. Half-a-dozen inmates had died in the jail within a week earlier this month.
