Human chain, rally mark anti-drug abuse day

FOR A Cause: Participants of a human chain on DB Road in the city on Tuesday to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Coimbatore: A human chain by hundreds of students with placards about ill-effects of drug abuse and a rally of students along with the personnel of 105 Battalion of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) marked the observance of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Narcotic Intelligence Bureau CID personnel and Shri Nehru Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School organised the human chain and rally. The rally, flagged off by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), Coimbatore City, S.V. Karuppasamy, started from DB Road and went through TV Samy Road west, Lawley Road junction, Thadagam Road junction and ended on the school premises on Robertson Road.

Placards were placed on road junctions and handbills and pamphlets were distributed.

Slides on ill-effects of drugs were also distributed to cinemas, G. Krishnamoorthy, Inspector of NIB CID, said.

Student’s Welfare Co-ordinator of Bharatiar University M. Padmanabhan, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Law and Order – West) R. Chakvarthy, Deputy Commandant of RAF Jose, President of the Educational Trust Mangilalji and Principal of the School V. Selvaraj addressed the students. DIG of Police, Coimbatore Range, M.N. Manjunatha said, “Drug abuse affect not only an individual but the entire family, community, society and ultimately the nation. Protecting the youth from drug abuse is the only way to ensure that the country’s human resource is channelised in the right direction.”
