Kidney transplant failure: foul play alleged

Kidney given to someone else, alleges donor

Tragic turn: Legislators P. Janardhan Reddy and G.Sayyanna enquiring about the health of M.Venkateswarlu in Hyderabad on Tuesday. At right is his daughter, Radhika, who donated one of her kidneys.

HYDERABAD: “We want the Government to act immediately and render justice,” said 21-year-old Radhika in an emotionally-charged voice, alleging foul play in the failure of kidney transplantation undergone by her father, M. Venkateswarlu, at the Osmania General Hospital here recently.

Forty-year-old Venkateswarlu, who was suffering from kidney failure for the past few years, underwent kidney transplantation on June 11 after Radhika donated it. However, the kidney failed within two days and had to be removed by doctors.

Talking to reporters on Tuesday after senior Congress legislator, P.Janardhan Reddy, called on Radhika and her ailing father, who is undergoing dialysis at the hospital, she charged the doctors with negligence.

Questioning how the kidney donated by her could fail when pre-transplantation tests had established 100 per cent compatibility, she alleged that her kidney was “given to someone else.”

Second transplantation

She asked the Government to ensure a second transplantation for her father and payment of compensation to her. Earlier, Radhika’s father told Mr. Reddy that he has four daughters and urged him to see that justice was done.

Osmania Hospital Superintendent Girish Narayan informed the Congress leader that complications had developed within two-and-half days of the surgery and the kidney stopped functioning. The surgeons then decided to remove it.

He said that such complications develop in one per cent of the patients who undergo transplantation and the compatibility had nothing to do with it.

He said the hospital was exploring if a second transplantation could be taken up.

Doubts

Mr. Reddy said the failure of the kidney was creating doubts and demanded a thorough inquiry by a senior IPS officer into the episode.

Stringent action should be taken if the allegations prove correct.

He also demanded Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to sanction Rs.5 lakhs from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Later, TDP MLA G. Sayyanna also called on them and demanded a probe into the allegations.
