Cadet power: NCC cadets take out a traffic awareness rally in Puducherry on Wednesday.
PUDUCHERRY: At the firing range at NCC headquarters here on Wednesday evening, about 100 cadets were all business. Some 20 of them, dressed in khaki shorts, were lying on the ground and aiming at their targets. They were a picture of concentration, only their heads and arms moving as they sighted on the target and squeezed the trigger. Around 300 cadets belonging to the Junior and Senior divisions, officers and staff had just left on a “traffic control awareness rally,” flagged off by Colonel K. Durga Prasad, group Commander, NCC Group Headquarters, Puducherry. The cadets from Karaikal, Mahe, Yanam, Puducherry, Cuddalore and Tiruchi are in Puducherry for a 12-day combined annual training camp, which began on June 20. The camp is being organised to select cadets for the Republic Day contingent from Tamil Nadu. “We will be selecting 100-odd cadets for the inter-group camp to identify cadets for R-Day parade in New Delhi. The cadets will be trained in drill (with rifles), march past, firing and also in cultural programmes such as group singing, dance and miming,” said Lt Colonel A S Narayanan, Camp Commandant. Along with the Republic Day parade selection camp, the annual training camp for juniors (school students) is being held. They are being trained in drill, rifle firing and map reading. The cadets’ day starts with a run or exercise. After breakfast, they drill without the rifles, followed by lunch, more drill and evening classes.
