Reservoir proposal changes opposed

Staff Reporter

SALEM: The Veerahanur Ponnaliyamman Anaicut Beneficiaries Welfare Federation has appealed to the district administration to take steps to implement a proposal for forming a new reservoir at the foothills of Pachamalai without any changes to it.

The proposal was aimed at providing direct irrigation facility to 481 acres. In addition to this, about 4,000 acres would benefit from the groundwater, which would get recharged due to the storage in the new reservoir. About 20,000 farmers in 14 villages including Veerahanur, Thedavur, Vellaiyur, Pagadapadi, Thittacheri, K. Rajapalayam, Udumbiyam and Lathuvadi would benefit, if the proposal was implemented. Further, the administration could supply drinking water to more than 50,000 persons from the reservoir, a petition submitted by the federation to the district administration said.

The farmers and residents in the area were willing to provide the required land to the government for the construction of the reservoir and channels. The officials of Revenue and Public Works Departments had inspected the site selected for the construction of reservoir on several occasions. But the proposal was yet to take off, the federation said.

Meanwhile, the federation said, the district administration had reportedly modified the proposal and was trying to construct the reservoir in the forest area. Urging the administration to drop the move, the federation appealed to the Collector to implement the proposal.
