Lorry owners to support strike

NAMAKKAL: The State Lorry Owners Federation has decided to support the indefinite strike called by the Karnataka State Lorry Owners Federation from the midnight of June 30 to protest against the Karnataka Government’s order to install speed governors in lorries.
According to a press release from federation president P. Sengodan, the Karnataka Government had directed that speed governors should be fixed in all lorries, including the vehicles coming from other States. The order would come into effect from July 1.
The federation release said that the move would affect a large number of lorry owners in Tamil Nadu, who operate their vehicles through Karnataka.
The lorry operators in Karnataka announced the strike urging the government to withdraw the order.
Residents block traffic
Residents of Thevangar Colony here blocked traffic on Harur main road on Tuesday night urging the police to take steps to nab a group of persons who reportedly assaulted a few residents of the colony. Police said about the group reportedly assaulted two youths, when they were walking on the road.
On seeing this, residents in the colony tried to prevent the group. This led to a clash between the residents and the group.
Stating that the police personnel were causing delay in taking action against the group, residents resorted to a road blockade. Police personnel pacified the agitators.
