Staff Correspondent
Belgaum: Regional Commissioner Amita Prasad has asked Deputy Commissioners in Belgaum Revenue Division to set up emergency relief teams to ensure safety of life and property, particularly in villages along the banks of the Krishna and other major rivers, in the wake of heavy rainfall. Official sources said here on Wednesday that the relief teams should start working immediately in the wake of reports of heavy rainfall in certain parts of the division. The Deputy Commissioners should also announce telephone numbers of the District Relief Centre, they said. The taluk-level authorities should meet at least once a week to take stock of the flood/rainfall situation, besides appointing nodal officers at all gram panchayat and hobli centres. These nodal officers should visit affected areas and arrange for relief and report on the losses to the higher authorities. In view of the devastating floods in the district in the past two years, the Irrigation Department should keep vigil on inflows into reservoirs, dams and canals. All relief work taken up for 2005-06 and 2006-07 should be completed by this month-end, the sources added.
