Chitradurga: Chitradurga district has achieved the number one position under the Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) by meeting all quality standards.

This revelation was made by a central committee which visited the district recently to review the progress of works under the scheme. The team of National Quality Monitor (NQA) held a series of reviews of road works taken up under the scheme. It tested five crucial parameters before announcing the report.

The ambitious PMGSY was launched by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government in December 2001. The aim was to provide better road link in all the villages of the country.

It was found that owning to improper road connectivity in the villages, people, particularly farmers, were facing difficulty in transporting their farm produce to the cities or to the nearby market yards. Many perishable items got wasted as they could not be reached to yards on time because of the poor roads. To put an end to this problem, the scheme was launched by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajapayee.

To implement the project, preparation of a comprehensive and extensive road map was commenced using aerial and terrain survey. The data known as District Rural Road Programme Map (DRRPM) was prepared in 2004. Based on the data, the works were implemented across the country.

In Karnataka too, the works began in the same year in all the districts. The entire project was scheduled to be completed in 2009. As per the project, the Government planned to construct at least one all-weather road in every village. As far as Chitradurga is concerned, the project has been taken up in nine phases, while works in four phases has been completed.
