6,296 killed in accidents

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 6,296 persons died in road accidents in the last one year, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said.

Mr. Balakrishnan said in reply to questions in the Assembly on Wednesday that 703 accident victims were below the age of 12 years. As many as 12,804 criminal cases were registered since the Government came to power. This included 22 cases registered against LDF activists too. The Minister said 4,297 burglaries were reported during the last one year. Thiruvananthapuram accounted for the highest number of cases, 658. As many as 10,111 cases of atrocities against women and children were reported in the last one year and 12,016 persons were arrested.

He said 526 criminal cases were repealed with the permission of the court. Criminal cases were pending against 500 police personnel.

Education Minister M.A. Baby said 3,816 applications for duplicate SSLC certificates were pending clearance.

Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said an insurance scheme for fish workers would be introduced this financial year. As many as 17,000 fishermen’s families will be rehabilitated within two years under the Tsunami Rehabilitation Project. The Coastal Pura Scheme is awaiting the clearance of the Finance Department.

Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said public debt had increased to Rs.49,274.5 crore in 2006-07 from 45,925 crore in 2005-06, but the growth rate showed a decline.

Dr. Isaac said sales tax collection during 2005-06 was Rs.4,091.85 crore. It rose to 4,204.71 crore in 2006-07. The value added tax collection in 2005-06 was Rs.2,946.11 crore. It touched Rs.4,482.11 crore in 2006-07.
