Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: United Democratic Front (UDF) convener P.P. Thankachan has sought the Government’s immediate intervention to resolve the crisis in the construction sector. Inaugurating a Secretariat march organised by the Kerala Government Contractors Association on Wednesday, he said the crisis was precipitated by the steep increase in the price of construction materials, arrears the Government had to pay contractors and the inefficiency of the Public Works Department. He said the benefits given to big players such as those who undertook the KSTP work should be extended to small contractors also It was discriminatory on the part of the Government to ask small contractors to give a discount while increasing the tender amount of big players. The Government seemed to be trying to delay the payment of dues instead of clearing it in instalments. He wondered why the Government was not preparing estimates at market rates.
