Congress to hold talks with allies on coop. elections

Special Correspondent

SALEM: The Congress will initiate discussions with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and other allies on co-operative polls scheduled for the second week of July.

Disclosing this to reporters here on Tuesday, Congress Legislative Party leader D. Sudarshanam said the two-day discussions, beginning on June 28, would include seat sharing and other formalities. “However, we are for unanimous on election to the societies. Wherever we have chances of winning, we would like to contest.”

Claiming that cooperatives enjoyed a golden period during the Congress regime, , Mr. Sudarshanam refused to endorse the Pattali Makkal Katchi demand for establishing a separate body similar to the State Election Commission for holding cooperative polls. “It is their demand. Without consulting our leadership we cannot place such a demand now.”

AIADMK flayed

The peaceful conduct of the bypoll in the Madurai West exposed the “meek attempt of the AIADMK leadership to stall it under the ruse of law and order issues. Even Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta camped at the constituency and supervised the whole exercise personally despite having four observers, he said.
