This Day That Age
For the first time on such occasions, the flags are out in Downing Street, for the Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ Conference which opened in London on June 26. Whether this is indication of the beginning of a new chapter in the story of the Commonwealth one does not know, but there is good deal of discussion and speculation about the significance of the present meeting. However, as Mr. Nehru said at one of his Press conferences en route to London this kind of vague talk figures much more in newspapers than at the conference table itself. He has continued to emphasise all along, and most recently in London on arrival last night, that since members of the Commonwealth are sovereign States with their own elected Parliaments, a conference of this nature is not an Assembly of a super-State but a valuable forum for exchange of ideas. In this sense the Commonwealth, he observed, is of more advantage than an alliance as an alliance entails ommitments.
