dated June 28, 1957: Regional formula in Punjab

The Shiromani Akali Dal declared in Amritsar on June 26 that any impairing or whittling down of the regional formula for the Punjab would be treated by the Dal as “a challenge to overthrow the whole Punjab settlement” and it would be “compelled to resist this aggression” with all its strength.

The Working Committee of the Dal, which met on June 26 under the presidentship of Master Tara Singh, said in a resolution that the Hindi Raksha Samiti agitation was actuated by political motives and the “desire to suppress the Punjabi language and script and to dominate over the Sikhs by destroying the basis of the regional formula.”

The Collector of Kozhikode has issued a notification on June 26, under Section 76 of the Madras Public Health Act, declaring Kozhikode district as affected by influenza epidemic.

Nearly 700 cases have been reported to the health authorities on June 26 according to Dr. R. Subramaniam, Municipal Health Officer. “We are hopelessly short of medicines even for the main ingredients required for the influenza mixture...”
