GOLDEN LEAP: Though handicapped by a short runway Renjith Maheswary, did well to win.

PUNE: The wet conditions were not to the liking of the athletes as the Asian Grand Prix circuit wound up with no spectacular performance to talk of at the Baburao Sanas ground here on Wednesday.

Joseph Abraham, though not touching his best, won his first title of the circuit as Chinese Meng Yan dropped out of the 400 metres hurdles at the start, leaving him and Kazakh Yevgeniy Meleshenko to fight it out for the gold.

Abraham, the 25-year-old CRPF sub-inspector from Kottayam, timed 49.86, poorer than his national record at Guwahati (49.52) but it was a creditable achievement all the same on a rainy day.

“The dropping out of the Chinese (Meng Yan) at the first hurdle slowed me down a little,” said Abraham after the race.

Renjith Maheswary, handicapped by a short runway and jumping in the rain, touched 16.78 metres in the second round to complete a hat-trick of titles.

Eight others from among 13 who were poised for a sweep of the titles in the circuit obliged.

Disappointed

Three in a row it was for Sinimole Paulose also as she won unchallenged in the women’s 1500 metres, but the timing of 4:16.56, her poorest in three meets, left the Kerala girl disappointed. She was aiming for 4:10.00 towards qualification for the World championships.

Also disappointed was Anju Bobby George who could manage only a 6.21 that was far below her standards. “The wet runway was not helpful but I am not trying to say the rain was the reason for my performance,” said Anju.

Saurabh Vij,20, trying to find his feet in the senior section had his best moment in the circuit as he spoilt the hat-trick attempt of Kuwaiti Ahmed Gholum and won the gold with a last-round putt of 18.51 metres, a career-best for the Delhi boy. He attributed his better performance to the presence of National coach Bahadur Singh, former Asian Games shot put champion.

Vij’s previous best was the 18.26 in the Federation Cup at Kolkata.

Chitra Soman once again scored over Asian Games champion Olga Tereshkova, but this time she could clock only an ordinary 53.19 seconds. Chitra said that she had a fever since last night.

She, along with Manjeet Kaur, Iylene Samantha and Mandeep Kaur clocked 3:33.79 in the 4x400m relay, coming second behind China for the second time.
