Water board chief inspects Osmansagar

Staff Reporter

Hyderabad: K.S. Jawahar Reddy, Managing Director of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, inspected the Osmansagar conduit for a length of 14 km from Osmansagar dam to Asifnagar on Wednesday.

He directed officials to seal all openings between the CRS masonry covers on priority basis from habitat areas with cement mortar plastering or any other plastic material to prevent entry of external water and dust into the conduit.

The conduit was built in 1920 with lime mortar to draw 25 mgd of raw water to the filtration plant. The conduit was built meticulously by maintaining the uniform hydraulic gradient throughout the length. In spite of its long age, it is still serving. At present, 22 mgd of water is being drawn through this conduit.

According to a press release, Dr. Reddy asked officials at Laxminagar and Shaikpet areas to take up dewatering or diversion of stagnated stormwater adjacent to the conduit as there is a possibility of its entering the conduit. He suggested laying of parallel stormwater/sewer main in such critical segments to flow away external water from the conduit. Dr. Reddy also visited the garden downstream Osmansagar and discussed plans for its revival through the Tourism Department. He also wanted proposals to be made for development of the open land area. The current water level in Osmansagar is 1766.20 ft against the full tank level of 1790.00 ft. Fresh water had just entered the lake due to the recent rain.
