BANGALORE: The State Government has decided introduce bus rapid transit system (BRTS) in Mysore at an estimated cost of Rs. 615 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission. The Government has dropped its plan to introduce electric trolley buses in Mysore on the ground that it was too capital intensive. Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Minister for Transport N. Cheluvarayaswamy said work on the project would commence within two months and it was likely to be completed in four years. The Union and State Governments and the Karnataka State Transport Road Corporation would share the cost of the project on a 50:35:15 ratio. An empowered committee headed by Chief Secretary P.B. Mahishi had cleared the 74-km project, he said. The project was envisaged to facilitate high-speed transportation within the city at reasonable cost. Separate corridors would be identified for bus service. The project aims at encouraging people to travel in buses, which would be much faster and comfortable than cars. A bus has a capacity to carry passengers of 22 cars. The Government was waiting for some clearances from the Mysore City Corporation, the Minister said.
