Teachers doubtful of increase in seats

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Teachers of the MKCG medical college are sceptical about the possibilities of increase of its intake strength of students during the current session.

Their hopes of getting a nod from the Medical Council of India (MCI) to increase the seats of the medical college from existing 107 to 150 have faced a major setback following recent directive of the MCI to get seats at SCB medical college reduced to 107 again.

The MCI has taken this decision for the SCB medical college due to lack of infrastructure. It is the same situation at the MKCG medical college also.

According to the secretary of the local unit of the Orissa Medical College Teachers’ Association (OMTA), Sachidananda Mohanty, they are yet to get any communiqué regarding request for increase of seats from the MCI. Counselling for admission of new batch of medical students of the State is to begin in a week.

Mr. Mohanty said till they get a letter from the MCI whether seats would be increased or not they would hope for the best. A team of the MCI had visited the medical college last month to take note of its infrastructure in relation to the demand for increase of seats.
