Thiruvananthapuram: Shops and business establishments in the city downed shutters on Wednesday in response to a call for a State-wide hartal called by traders’ organisations and trade unions to protest against the entry of domestic and foreign corporates into the retail sector. The hartal was near-total. Traders’ organisations, including the Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi and Vyapari Vyavasayi Samithi, and trade unions affiliated to various political parties organised a protest rally to the Secretariat and staged a dharna in front of the Raj Bhavan. Inaugurating the dharna, Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said the State Government was opposed to the entry of corporates into the retail sector in Kerala. Leader of the Opposition Oommen chandy; Communist Party of India State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan; the Revolutionary Socialist Party leader T.J. Chandrachoodan; Bharatiya Janata Party State general secretary A.N. Radhakrishnan; the Indian Union Muslim League leader Cherkalam Abdullah and others spoke.
