Public told to take precautions

Thiruvananthapuram: The district health administration has appealed to the public to take precautions against fever and approach doctors if it does not subside within two days. Fever can be a symptom of many infectious diseases and hence this public health alert, District Medical Officer Kumai G. Prema said here on Wednesday.

Three mobile health teams of the department have been visiting coastal areas from Poovar to Anchuthengu for giving emergency medical care. Vector-control activities, fever surveillance and collection of blood samples for lab analysis are continuing.

Five cases of dengue fever were confirmed in the district on Wednesday, from Kuttichal, Paruthippara, Marenellore, Tholikkode and Kowdiar in the district, taking the total number of cases reported in the district this year to 122. Three cases of leptospirosis, one of malaria and 89 of diarrhoeal diseases were also reported.

Leptospirosis has been reported from Ambalathumbhagam, Thirumala and Peringammala. The malaria case was reported from Poovar, and the patient contracted the infection following a trip to Mangalore.

The district reported 2,681 cases of fever on Wednesday, out of which 10 are suspected to be dengue and 25 chikungunya. This takes the total number of suspected chikungunya cases in the district this year to 727. Cases of suspected chikungunya continue to be confined to the Vellarada, Vellanad, Nedumangad, Perumkadavila and Attingal areas. The fact that the viral infection could be contained to one geographic belt has been a matter of great relief to the health department.
