They are opposed to the P. K. Tripathy panel report on firing at Sorana
BHUBANESWAR: Members of Chilika Mastchyajibee Mahasangha (CMS), a fishermen’s body, on Tuesday organised a huge rally to reject the report of Justice P.K. Tripathy Commission probing the police firing at Sorana in Khurda district in which five fishermen were killed. The Chilika fishermen were seen raising slogans in front of the State Assembly to vent their anger against the State’s ‘indifferent attitude’ to contain activities of prawn mafia inside the Chilika lake. “On May 29, 1999, the police attacked the innocent fishermen. Discovery of pellets along with bullets from bodies of fishermen proved unholy nexus between the police and mafia in attacking people,” said CMS president Balaram Das. He said when no one from the police side was injured. “How can the commission justified the firing saying the police had to fire for self-defence.” “The commission had taken six long years to finalise the report. Instead of making it public, the government sat over it for two years. We suspect foul play in the inquiry. Therefore we are rejecting it,” Mr. Das said.
