Congress organises rally in Cuttack

Correspondent

CUTTACK: The Opposition Congress on Wednesday staged a massive rally in Cuttack city as part of its fortnight-long agitation against what it calls "mis-governance" of the ruling coalition of BJD-BJP.

Nearly 10,000 party activists and supporters gathered in the city at Gouri Shankar Park on the last day of the agitation and over 4000 of them later courted arrest as part of their civil disobedience movement. Leading from the front under the City Congress chief Suresh Mohapatra, the Congress activists went on a rally from the Park to the Collectorate. They submitted a memorandum to the representative of the district administration that was addressed to the Governor.

The agitation against the present Government would continue until the Chief Minister was removed, Mr. Mohapatra said. State PCC chief Jayadev Jena and other state leaders also joined in the rally and demonstration. Addressing the gathering, the leaders listed the “wrong deeds” of the ruling party and came down heavily on the coalition Government.

The district police organisation had made elaborate arrangements for the agitation. "The demonstration and rally of the Congress went off peacefully without any untoward incident," said district SP Soumendra Priyadarshi. All the Congress activists courted arrest were later released in the afternoon, police sources said.
