Army assures all help to Delhi Govt. for Commonwealth Games

Civil and military authorities to interact quarterly in Delhi

NEW DELHI: A decision to revive quarterly interaction between the civil and military authorities in Delhi was taken at the Civil-Military Liaison Conference organised by the Department of Home at Delhi Secretariat here on Tuesday.

At the meeting chaired by Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna, the Delhi Government reiterated its commitment to cooperate in providing amenities like drinking water and electricity in the Delhi Cantonment area apart from possible incentive as per existing policy to make the Cantonment area encroachment-free.

For their part, the military officers assured of their help in organising the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the Capital, and of providing assistance in disaster management and during unforeseen situations.

The conference, which is organised annually to maintain harmonious relations between the civil authorities and the Army and to provide a joint forum to find just and amicable solutions to pending issues in the shortest possible time-frame, was also attended by the Chief Minister, State Chief Secretary, Police Commissioner; Delhi Development Authority Vice-Chairman, Delhi Jal Board Chief Executive Officer, Principal Secretaries of the Delhi Government, and GOC-in-C Western Command and GOC Delhi Area among others.

Mr. Khanna said the Delhi Government would continue to extend all possible support and have no objection in reviving quarterly joint review by its Principal Secretary (Home) and the GOC Delhi Area. He said the Government would soon conduct a review of the disaster management system in Delhi for which the military officers would also be invited. Stating that procedures should not be allowed to hamper critical decisions, the L-G said a traffic coordination group had already been constituted under the chairmanship of Principal Secretary (Home) for which services of a consultant, who established the traffic management system in New York are being requisitioned. He said the military officers would be involved in finalising proposed group.

Pointing out that the military would also play a key role in ensuring the success of the Commonwealth Games, Mr. Khanna underlined the need for imbibing the discipline of the military officers in making work culture more meaningful. He said their expertise could also be utilised for making the functioning of civil hospitals more organised. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit informed that Government had given employment to 1,500 ex-Servicemen in its offices. Also, she said the Government would provide all help for establishment of a hospital for the terminally ill in the Delhi Cantonment area.
