Mobile ‘hacker’ arrested

Staff Reporter

Accused was causing heavy loss to a mobile service provider

Reliance phones were being tampered with so as to use SIM cards of other service providers

Reliance has a pact with Nokia to provide its mobiles at subsidised prices with its SIM card

NEW DELHI: A young man has been arrested at Shakarpur here for allegedly tampering with the software of Nokia mobile phones causing loss to a prominent mobile service provider.

In a complaint registered recently at the Shakarpur police station, Reliance Communications had said that the software of Nokia mobile phones was being tampered by some people making it possible for Nokia customers to use SIM cards of service providers other than Reliance Communications. Reliance Communications, which has a pact with Nokia to provide its mobiles at subsidised prices with its SIM card, was incurring heavy losses due to the hacking of the software.

A team was constituted under the overall supervision of Preet Vihar ACP P. Karunakaran to collect more information about the alleged hacking. Acting on a tip-off, one Pawan Goel was arrested at Vikas Marg on Monday when he came to deliver some compact discs containing software data to one of his clients.

During interrogation, Pawan purportedly told the police that he owned a mobile repair shop in Ghaffar Market and in his quest to learn more about mobiles he became well-versed with the technique of hacking the software of Nokia mobile phones. He could unlock the security code of mobile phones and change the software. He then developed links with other people involved in the murky business and used his knowledge to make quick money. He allegedly charged Rs. 100 to 150 for software change.
