Kids drown in sewage tank

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Two children drowned in a sewage tank at a construction site in Ghazipur here on Tuesday.

The boys, Saurab (12) and Vipin (8), along with their two friends were playing at the construction site around 5-30 p.m. when Vipin accidentally slipped and fell into the tank. Saurab fell into the tank trying to pull Vipin out. Their friends then rushed to the village and narrated the whole incident to Saurab’s mother.

“We were getting ready for a bath after the day’s work when the woman came running to us screaming that two children had fallen into the tank. We rushed to the tank and five of us jumped inside. We managed to pull out Saurab who was still gasping for breath. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. We returned to the construction site to search for Vipin, but the police arrived there and did not allow us to venture inside the tank,” said Mukesh, one of the labourers at the construction site.

Search operation

The search operation continued till 10 in the night without any success. The operation was resumed on Wednesday morning and Vipin’s body was fished out around 11 a.m. “The fathers of both Saurab and Vipin are labourers. Their families hail from Bihar and they live in rented accommodation in Ghazipur village,” said a police officer.

The construction work at the site is being carried out at the instance of the Delhi Agricultural Marketing Board.

Though officials present at the construction site were tight-lipped about who actually had dug up the tank inside the boundary wall of the site, some labourers said it was the work of the locals to drain out the village sewage.
