It is open to all in the State First, they will get counselling
MADURAI: In an attempt to bring succour to the disabled persons struggling to face legal issues, the Akshaya Rehabilitation Trust, which works for the holistic development of disabled youth, will organise a free legal aid camp exclusively for the physically challenged as well as their stakeholders at Race Course Stadium here on June 30. “In a complex society, problems are everywhere. Most of the people do not approach police or court to settle issues. For those with disabilities, it becomes all the more difficult, as we can see many finding it difficult to solve problems. Hence, we have planned to organise this camp to help them get relieved of their troubles,” said K. Kathiresan, a practising lawyer and the programme director of the trust. Recognised by the Office of the State Commissioner for Disabilities, the trust, which is a non-governmental organisation found by a group of physically challenged persons, will provide legal help through the District Legal Aid Authority for the economically deprived persons. “For those, who are not familiar with court proceedings, we advise how to go about. Right from registering a complaint to filing a case, they will be briefed about different stages. All types of cases, including those of family, civil, consumer and criminal in nature and human rights violations, will be entertained,” he said. The beneficiaries will be divided as those who file a new case and those who have cases pending. They will be counselled first. If they need any help in registering complaints in police stations, the camp will also arrange for it. “The main objective of the camp, which is open for all disabled persons across the State, will be to find legal remedy for all their problems without any expenses. It is not just about funding cases in court. Particularly, in civil and family cases, the beneficiaries will be briefed about their rights, obligations, and entitlement. We will try to share information on the existing laws for persons with disabilities,” said Mr. Kathiresan, who is also a disabled person. For further details, dial 9843070091.
