“Dera head did not cooperate”

Chandigarh: Punjab Advocate-General H.S. Matthelwal said on Wednesday the State Government gave the go-ahead to arrest the Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh because he was “not cooperating” in the investigations into the charge that he denigrated Sikh Guru Gobind Singh.

State Principal Secretary (Home) B.C. Gupta said formal permission had been given for the arrest and prosecution of the Dera head on the charge of hurting religious sentiments of Sikhs.

The permission followed a conditional non-bailable arrest warrant issued against him by a court in Bhatinda on June 20 following a case filed by R. Sidhu, president of the district unit of a Sikh sabha.

Issuing the warrant returnable on July 1, the court stipulated that the police seek the permission of the State Government for prosecuting Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

The Government’s sanction came hours after the Akal Takht rejected a fresh “apology” by the Dera chief. — PTI
