Pangs of guilt, doctor surrenders

Marcus Dam

KOLKATA: It must have been a stab in the conscience that led the doctor of a nursing home at Sonarpur in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district to walk into the local thana and surrender before the police shortly after a patient he was treating died recently.

The 33-year-old patient died of complications on June 21. “The police at the local Sonarpur thana have accepted his first information report that says that it was because of a mistake of his that the patient died,” the district’s SP, S.N. Gupta, told The Hindu on Wednesday.

“I am feeling pain in my heart and whatever action is taken against me will be welcome,” said Prodyut Kumar Naskar. The police, taken somewhat by surprise, did not arrest him and have referred the matter to the district’s medical board.

“Action will be taken only after the board submits its report,” Mr. Gupta said.
