SAGAR (SHIMOGA DISTRICT): Flash floods in the Varada following heavy rain in the last three days inundated a vast stretch of paddy fields in Talaguppa hobli causing heavy loss to farmers.

It is said that paddy transplanted in more than 1,100 acres of land had been inundated by the flash floods. Flash floods in the area are said to be an annual feature during the rainy season. What has upset farmers is that paddy fields in over 1,100 acres of land had been damaged in the beginning of the rainy season.

A delegation led by president of the Sagar Taluk Congress Committee N.G. Pai visited the flood-affected areas on Thursday, including Saiduru, Tadagalale, Kanasa and Hattisalu.

Relief

The delegation urged the State Government to announce immediate compensation of at least Rs. 3,500 an acre as 90 per cent of the farmers affected by the floods were the small farmers holding less that four acres of land.

It asked the Government to arrange for the supply of the seeds and fertilizers and bring the Sagar taluk under the purview of the crop insurance scheme, which had been restricted to Shimoga and Shikaripur taluks.

Vice President of the Shimoga Zilla Panchayat Bheemaneri Shivappa referred to the deteriorating road conditions in several parts of Sagar taluk such as Korave, Karkikosa and Tyagarti and emphasised the need to take up their repair.

He said that the repeated complaints to Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Deputy Commissioner T.K. Anilkumar were of no avail.

He referred to the land slips in parts of Avinahalli, Barangi and Karuru hoblis and said that it had affected the agricultural land.

He demanded that steps be taken to remove silt from the sides of the streams.

Tahsildar Nagaraj Honavalli, who was present, said that compensation to the affected families would be given according to the norms fixed by the Government.

Preventive steps

The delegation urged the administration to take preventive measures to mitigate the sufferings of families residing at Peesagadde near Tadagalale, which is expected to be turned into an island and would be cut off from the outside world if it rained continuously for the next two or three days.

The delegation said that arrangements should be made to supply food and other essential commodities to the families if they were isolated. The Government should arrange a ferry in such a situation.

The delegation comprised members of the zilla panchayat B.R. Jayanth and Ravi Kugwad, president of the Sagar Taluk Panchayat Mallikarjun and Congress workers Kalase Chandrappa, T.N. Srinivas and Mandagalale Huchappa.
