FamBELLARY: The Department of Horticulture has come out with certain schemes, including imparting of training and financial assistance, in an effort to persuade horticulturists in Bellary district to take up organic farming at least in a small way. Deputy Director of the Horticulture Department C. Ramachandra told The Hindu here on Thursday that a training programme and visit to farms to demonstrate the advantage of organic farming had been planned for the current year under t he National Horticultural Mission. Around 700 horticulturists from all seven taluks would be imparted training, in batches, in this regard. They would be told about the financial assistance they would get to encourage them if they took up organic horticulture. The department would also extend all kinds of assistance to horticulturists in the district, including arranging for tie-ups with Bangalore-based organisations already engaged in organic farming and procurement of horticultural produce.
